Accomplishments

  • One of the objectives, as per the MOI Act 1999, is “to demonstrate and communicate to the scientific community and the public at large the results of research and the importance of oceanography in the conservation, maintenance, management, utilization and development of resources based on marine and coastal ecosystems”.
  • In order to meet the above objective, I have planned and organized several awareness campaigns with various stakeholders including; Ministries and Departments; Parastatal Bodies; Local and International Universities; Scientific Communities; Private Sector; NGOs; Regional and International Organizations, Students (primary, secondary and tertiary) and the general public. I have also contributed towards community outreach through national projects such as “Community Based Coral Culture”, whereby fishers and coastal communities have been sensitized on the importance of corals, coral reefs and the need for rehabilitation.
  • I represented the MOI in the capacity of Communication Officer on pan African projects, financed by the European Union and managed by the African Union Commission, including the African Monitoring of the Environment for Sustainable Development (AMESD), Monitoring for Environment and Security in Africa (MESA) as well as the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) and Africa project and has been responsible for the organization of major events under those projects.
  • Some of the high profile events in which I have provided assistance include the Indian Ocean Global Ocean Observing System (IOGOOS), the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA), the Regional Conference on “Climate Change Impacts, Adaptation and Mitigation in the WIO region: Solutions to the Crisis”, and UNEP Nairobi Convention “Science to Policy Workshop”.
  • Through the organization of these prestigious events, I have gained experience in the appropriate protocols related to local as well as foreign delegates, VIPs and Ministers. My experience also involves planning and implementation of indoor and outdoor activities, sensitization campaigns and visits.
