Electrocardiogram Technician, EKG Technician

  • The Cardiac Unit of one of the key district hospitals of the Island of Mauritius where I personally perform effectively and efficiently a minimum of 200 EKGs on a daily turnover of +500 patients consisting primarily of elderly people
  • My functions and responsibilities consist primarily of overseeing, administering and monitoring a variety of vital tests on a patient's pulmonary and cardiovascular system for diagnostic, therapeutic, and/or reporting purposes to physicians for analysis and suitable and effective actions for any detecting issues
  • EKG technicians are vitally important allied healthcare team members as their work creates the very foundation on which treatment of patients suffering from lung and/or heart conditions depend
  • Other tasks include, but are not limited, to the following:
  • Explains the function and process of EKG exams to patients prior to the test
  • Ensures that all patients are calm and relaxed during the process
  • Conduct professionally effectively and efficiently various tests of patients' blood pressure and heart's conditions, identify any anomaly and/or potential issues at one's level, and report the results to attending physicians for appropriate actions
  • Conduct regular audit of the department's equipment and materials and assume responsibility of ordering same as and when required to prevent any shortage and/or negative impacts on department operations and patients
  • Keep effective records of all equipment and materials under my responsibility and perform regular maintenance of equipment to ensure proper working order and availability, and advise higher authority of any defects for repair or replacement
  • Keep statistics of patients' movements, keep track of any visible variance, and advise higher authority of same for effective and efficient response and actions.

  • Primary duties were to
  • Administer effectively and accurately a series of tests of vital signs of patients, including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration and weight, and observe, monitor and record results and conditions for attending physicians
  • Make beds and provide daily personal hygiene care to patients to prevent infections as well as to give and ensure overall reassurance, comfort and safety
  • Clean methodically patients' living areas while ensuring that all hospital hygienic and safety protocols are fully respected at all times
  • Assume responsibility for food control and assist in serving meals and in feeding patients as per established policies and procedures
  • Manage and facilitate patients' activities while ensuring their safety and facilitating social and emotional support for their well-being
  • Monitor constantly patients' conditions, comfort and safety, and report and/or take actions to remedy situation as per training and competence and established protocols
  • Communicate calmly and effectively with parents, relatives, peers, and other care givers, including doctors and nurses, to ensure the reporting and transmission of right information for the appropriate treatment and welfare of all patients, which is my primary concern
